Solar panels and wind turbines

Solar panels and wind turbines are being installed in many places as a way to combat our carbon usage and improve the environment, but are they such a good idea? It is said that solar panels require almost as much energy to manufacture them as they would ever produce in their lifespan. They also require the use of a silicon compound that has toxic residue. Wind Turbines require so much concrete for their base that the required energy to mine and produce it, as well as to fabricate the steel poles also detracts from their energy creation value. Are these 'alternative' fuels really the way of the future? You decide!
